The most senior civil servant in the Department of Health is stepping down, the Health Minister Leo Varadakar has confirmed.

Dr Ambrose McLoughlin is moving from his role as Secretary-General to a new position supporting the implementation of the Healthy Ireland initiative by the government.

He accepted his current role just 28 months ago. Dr McLoughlin is due to retire next June after a 40 year career in the public service.

The move was agreed by the Minister and the Secretary-General in the context of his decision to retire.

Mr Varadkar paid tribute to him - saying his extensive experience in the health arena will provide valuable inside in his new role.

"I look forward to continuing to work closely with Ambrose in his new role and expect to rely on his counsel and advice into the future," Mr Varadkar said.

"His extensive experience in the health arena will provide invaluable insight and guidance in progressing the achievement of the goals set out in the Healthy Ireland framework" Mr Varadkar added.

Dr McLoughlin said "It has been a privilege to serve as Secretary-General in the Department of Health and I am very proud to take up this new role."
