The Sinn Fein President is defending the 'fifty quid a week' pension he receives for his time as a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Gerry Adams retired from the seat in 2010 when he decided to run for the Dail but had served nearly 12 years as a representative for the Belfast West constituency.

He currently earns €87,000 a year as a TD.

It follows a study in the Sunday Business Post yesterday about declarations of interest by TDs for last year, which referenced Mr. Adams' pension on top of his salary.

The paper also said Mr. Adams declares that he also gets additional income as a 'writer'. He is the author of some newspaper columns and several books.

TDs are required to declare any additional income over €2,600 on an annual basis - as well as travel bills and shares, or land valued over €13,000.

The study found that Justice Minister Alan Shatter had the largest property portfolio of any Cabinet Minister. It said Mr. has a share in 15 properties in Dublin, London and Florida.

This morning on Newstalk Breakfast, Mr. Adams denied that his pension is something his party would object to if it related to someone else.
