The new Social Democrats party has unveiled five new election candidates today.

Ex-Labour Senator James Heffernan and Dublin City Councillor Gary Gannon are among those to be added to the ticket.

The other three are unelected and hail from Limerick, Galway and Dublin.

The five candidates are:

  • Cllr Gary Gannon (North Inner City, running in Dublin Central)
  • Anne Marie McNally (running in Dublin Mid-West)
  • Senator James Heffernan (running in Limerick County)
  • Sarah Jane Hennelly (running in Limerick City)
  • Niall O'Tuathail (running in Galway West/South Mayo)

Joint leader of the Social Democrats, Deputy Stephen Donnelly, spoke about the party's newest candidates on Newstalk Lunchtime today. He was joined by Senator Heffernan.

Deputy Donnelly started by saying it's a 'good day' for the young party, and the new additions bring their total so far to eight candidates:

The Social Democrats party was founded in July by TDs Stephen Donnelly, Róisín Shortall and Catherine Murphy.

The party says it will campaign for "high-quality public services, strong communities and a thriving economy".
