FIFA has hit Luis Suarez with a 9-game suspension and a four month ban from "any football activity" for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini in a World Cup group match on Monday.

The punishment was revealed in a media briefing.

FIFA's media officer Delia Fisher said: "The player Luis Suarez is suspended for nine matches and banned for four months from any football related activity.

"The Fifa disciplinary committee has decided the player is regarded as having breached article 48 paragraph one and article 57. The player is to be suspended for nine matches, the first is the upcoming match between Uruguay and Colombia on Saturday."

The terms of the ban mean that Suarez will be banned from both Uruguay and Liverpool fixtures. Under the terms of the ban, he cannot play for Liverpool until November.

In addition a stadium ban has been imposed on the striker as revealed in a FIFA statement:

"A stadium ban is pronounced against the player Luis Suárez in accordance with art. 21 of the FDC as follows: the player Luis Suárez is prohibited from entering the confines of any stadium during the period of the ban (point 3). The player Luis Suárez is prohibited from entering the confines of any stadium in which the representative team of Uruguay is playing while he has to serve the nine-match suspension (point 2). The player Luis Suárez is ordered to pay a fine in the amount of CHF 100,000."

Suarez was banned for 10 games last year after biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic, while playing for Liverpool.

The former Ajax forward was also given a seven-game ban by the Dutch FA for biting PSV's Ottman Bakkal during a league match in 2010.
