Senior Ministers will meet again today to discuss the ongoing issues surrounding water charges.

No announcement is expected after the meeting of the Economic Management Council (EMC) with Government sources saying they are determined to take time to get any new package of measures right.

The EMC consists of the Taoiseach, Tánaiste and Finance and Public Expenditure Ministers.

Also attending today will be Environment Minister Alan Kelly and Communications Minister Alex White who have responsibility for Irish Water and parent company, Ervia.

The discussion will look at ongoing efforts to better explain to people about water charges and exactly what will have to be paid.

A spokesperson for the Government says ahead of planned protests around the country this weekend that they are aware people feel strongly and they will have to listen and take things into consideration. However, the coalition is standing firm that financial realities remain and that water will have to be paid for.

Meanwhile, The Public Expenditure Minister admits mistakes were made in the establishment of Irish Water.

Minister Brendan Howlin says the coalition was under pressure from the Troika to implement charges and the result was that they did not get it all right.

"We'd no option, we couldn't go in to the Troika and say 'we're not doing that' - but we have now a little bit more breathing space to re-elect on exactly how it's to be done; and certainly mistakes have been made, as have been acknowledged by a number of ministers" he said.

“Unfortunately (Irish Water) got immersed into a timeframe to deal with Troika demands that have proven really demanding and stressful not least on the Irish public. The Government is not blind or deaf to those views.”
