Taoiseach says protesters in Sligo showed scant regard for the safety of women and children

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has said some of those people protesting against water charges during his visit to Sligo tonight, including individuals who jumped on his car bonnet while he was entering the venue, should come forward and explain what their "agenda" is.

Enda Kenny said protesters in Sligo last night showed scant regard for the safety of women and children.

Speaking to Ocean FM last night, after his car was surrounded as he entered the Sligo Park Hotel, the Taoiseach said the protests of some “is not about water” but is instead driven by a “more sinister agenda.”

A number of protesters jumped on the bonnet of the Taoiseach’s car, and kicked the car as it arrived at the venue. The disturbance was brief and no arrests were made. The Taoiseach said the tactics employed by the protesters was not acceptable and he questioned “the agenda” of those who had blocked the entrance to the hotel and jumped on his car.

“You don’t protest an issue in the way that they did,” he said.

“They blocked the entrance, they jumped on top of the car ... their language was not what you’d use about issues like that. So maybe you should ask them what their agenda is? Maybe you should ask them who sent them here?”

The Taoiseach said that there had been a commitment from those organising the protest that the road would not be blocked. The Taoiseach said this commitment had been broken.
