A 15-year-old boy has been treated for severe burns in the US after he took part in the latest internet craze known as 'Fire Challenge'.

The teenager suffered second-degree burns after rubbing alcohol on his chest and seemingly setting the area on fire.

The 'Fire Challenge' has caused outrage online, with many appealing to potential participants to stop before it turns to tragedy like last year's 'Neknomination' trend.

The internet craze involves people either setting themselves on fire or rubbing themselves in flammable substances and then setting themselves alight for absolutely no reason other than to record the consequences.

“Unbearable, yeah. Literally after it got put out it was already blistering, it’s just hard," the teenager told his local news station in Kentucky.

One of the firefighters who assisted the teenager and took him to hospital said that the burns he has suffered now will affect him for the rest of his life.

“After getting a second or third degree burn later on in life if you get a sunburn it’s going to be compounded by these particular burns,” the emergency worker told WYKT News in Kentucky.

“You can get caught on fire and die, your house can get caught on fire, wherever you’re at can get caught on fire,” said the teen, cautioning others not to light themselves on fire for any reason.
