Do we need the Angelus? Is it a fit for modern Ireland? Is it too long? What sort of sound is a bong anyway? All questions Ivan put to Chris this morning during the Breakfast paper review, as the pair discussed RTE’s possible consideration of altering the long standing traditional, twice daily, “reflective” minute.

Chris was firmly in the pro-Angelus camp, appreciating it as a moment “to exhale” at the end of the day, while Ivan was firmly opposed, although willing to make concessions, with his focus on the number of bongs.

“They’re saying they’re going to make it less about religion,” he told Chris, “but I just think 18 bongs is too many. I think 3 bongs would do, we’ll cut a deal make it 5 bongs.”

“We’ll cut it down - make it 15, 20 second.

Ivan has problems with the minute not just on a level of principle, but also on an aesthetic one, and told Chris he's willing to consider a change of approach.

“Is it an attractive sound? Bong! Bong! Give me a break. Play music, play one of your favourite tunes."

Besides discussions of the merits of the bong, the papers today focused on the death of a 24 year old Irish man following taking diet pills – the first such death in Ireland – and the ongoing talks on Greek’s debt crisis.
