Counting's just getting underway across the country to see if the country's voted for marriage equality.

A formal result's expected to be announced late this afternoon, but a clear picture of how the people have spoken will be known in a matter of a couple of hours.

Counting is also underway in the Carlow-Kilkenny Dáil by-election, and will get underway later in the presidential age poll.

This morning, presenters Ivan Yates and Chris Donoghue discussed the possible outcome of the counts this afternoon.

Ivan stated: "We know that there has been a strong turnout. We know that there's been a particularly strong turnout in two regards. One, cities in urban Ireland and secondly a whole cohort of younger people who have gone to extraordinary trouble and commitment to come vote. To come home to vote.

"I have to say that I voted Yes to both. I think there will be a 'Yes' result.

"I certainly think it will a decisive result.

He continued: "I could not believe the enthusiasm of guys going to vote on skateboards."

He finished by stating that people have been "drawn in by the compassionate, compelling stories of people for this. It means so much to them. Mothers who spoke about their sons, people who spoke about lives of secrecy.

"You are going to see the emergence of a modern Ireland out of this."
