Three foreign nationals have been arrested in New York on suspicion of trying to join the Islamic State.

According to the FBI, two of the men threatened to kill police officers and FBI agents if they were unable to travel to Syria.

The group - originally from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan - came to the FBI's attention following material they had posted online. The three were living in Brooklyn, New York.

Officials believe they wanted to travel to Syria to link up with IS militants.

They reportedly posted to Uzbek-language websites in recent months, and pledged to kill US President Barack Obama.

The three men - aged between 19 and 30 - have been charged with conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organisation.

New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton says they had a contingency plan.

“The idea was made quite plain, based on their own statements,” he said.

“If they were not able to go they would seek to acquire weapons here – handguns and machineguns - and seek to attack police offices.”
