Anyone driving to Electric Picnic today is being advised to avoid using sat navs.

Gardaí have put a major traffic management plan in place as 41,000 people travel to and from the Stradbally site over the weekend.

Diversions and restrictions will be in place in the areas surrounding the festival site. Parking is free for ticket holders, but gardaí have advised motorists to follow the dedicated routes and not rely on satellite navigation:

M7 Southbound - all event traffic travelling south on the M7 will exit at Junction 16 and on to Broomfield Roundabout on the Stradbally road. Follow signage.

M7 Northbound - exit at Junction 17 and follow signage.

Via Portlaoise - use relief road and follow signage.

M8 Northbound - exit at Junction 3 and follow signage through Ballacolla, Abbeyleix, Ballyroan and on to site

N80 - via Carlow – proceed straight to Stradbally.

R428 - via Athy – proceed straight to Stradbally.

You can read the full directions on the festival website and Garda Traffic site.

A dedicated festival shuttle bus will be operating to and from Portlaoise Train Station throughout the festival. Tickets cost €5 each way.

Rail services operate from Dublin, Cork and Limerick to Portlaoise. You can check schedules and book tickets through Irish Rail.

Bus Eireann and Marathon Travel services are operating from Dublin throughout the weekend, while there are also limited services for people travelling from Dublin Airport and Cork. Kelly Travel has some availability for those travelling from Limerick to the festival site on Sunday.

Further details on all of the above services, as well as information for those travelling by bike or looking for lift sharing options, are available on Electric Picnic's website.

Superintendent Joe Prendergast from Portlaoise Garda Station, has some advice for those heading down:

41,000 people have bought tickets to the Co Laois festival, which is 8,000 more than this time last year.

Reports and photographs from the festival will be posted on Newstalk.ie throughout the weekend.

For anyone attending the festival, Newstalk's Futureproof will also be hosting a show at Electric Picnic between 4 and 5pm on Saturday in the Science Gallery tent. You can find full details here.
