Miscellany, a student magazine produced by students of Trinity College Dublin, has apologised after it published an anonymous article that reportedly revealed how two men sneaked into the Trinity ball and raped a female student.

The article, anonymously written in a tongue-in-cheek style, details how the pair of male students disguised themselves as paramedics in an attempt to get past college security without tickets to the ball, an annual partied billed by the college’s student union as Europe’s largest private party.

The men, according to the article, were then placed in charge of a drunk woman inside the college campus, saying “We had made it, and had the STI to prove it.” In the post, the writer uses the term ‘Eskimo brothers’, which is a slang term used to describe two men who have sex with the same woman.

You can read the post below, which was tweeted by Lorna Bogue, president of the Young Greens:

Miscellany, which operates under funding allocated by Trinity’s Publications body, has called the article an “editorial oversight”, pulling the digital version from the website and recalling all the hard copies – though any student who collected their ball ticket earlier this morning already received a copy.

On its social media accounts, Miscellany has apologised for any offence caused, urging anyone affected by the article to contact the Rape Crisis Centre.

The Student Union’s Welfare Officer, Ian Mooney, said that the official stance of representative body was that while they accepted the article was an editorial oversight, the content was not acceptable.

“We know from a study that sexual consent is an issue in Trinity, so college publications should not be trivialising that with articles like this,” Mr Mooney said.
