As expected, social media has experienced quite the jump in activity over today's marriage equality referendum.

#HomeToVote is the number one trending topic in Ireland - the hashtag is being generated by those abroad travelling home to vote in today's referendum. While #MarRef2015 is coming in a close second.

#HometoVote has been tweeted some 27,000 times in the last 24 hours, with an average of 97 tweets a minute.

As well as those returning home the hashtag has also seen people from all over the world overwhelmed by the gesture being made by Irish voters.

#HomeToVote is not the only hashtag related to the marriage referendum that's taking off. #MarRef, which has been used as the general hashtag for the coverage of the referendum has gathered enormous traffic over the last month.

Yesterday #MarRef peaked garnering 10,600 tweets on the topic.

The reach the hashtag acquired shows the international interest that has surrounded the referendum. International outlets from The New York Times to The Guardian have all covered today's referendum.

Finally, #UseYourVote, a hastag started to encourage everyone to use their voice on the referendum, is also contributing on a worldwide stage. However, it peaked earlier in the month on May 7th reaching over 2,500 tweets in one day.

Elsewhere, the presidential age referendum, being talked about under the hashtag 'PresRef' isn't performing as strongly as the the other marriage referendum ones.

Regardless of which way you are voting the stats, as well as the coverage, is showing us that the world is watching.
