The United States is stepping up its response to the Ebola crisis in West Africa with plans to build 17 treatment centres.

President Barack Obama, who has called the epidemic a national security crisis, will reveal more details later today.

However, the US President is to send 3,000 military personnel to West Africa in a bid to 'turn the tide' on the epidemic.

Obama is to meet health bosses in Atlanta later, where he'll make the announcement, alongside other measures to fight the outbreak, which he's called a national security crisis.

The virus has killed more than 2,400 people in West Africa.

More than 20,000 people could become infected with the deadly Ebola virus, the World Health Organisation has claimed. Nearly 40% of the total number of reported cases have occurred within the past month.

The organisation also commented that the virus was still being spread in a "substantial number of localities" across the continent.
