Alison O’Connor, Irish Examiner columnist, and Ian O’Doherty of the Irish Independent joined Shane for this week’s Sunday Paper review.

As one would expect in light of today's referendum, Greece dominated the start of the discussion.

“The great myth that we’re all being peddled is that somehow this is a very complex, mysterious situation that nobody really understands. It’s actually all very simple,” Ian argued.

“When people are angry and frightened they make bad decisions - in life and in politics. [The Greek people] made a really bad decision. Greece was beginning… at least their decline was slowing down when Syriza came in. It’s like putting a dog in the driver’s seat, giving it the keys and then being really surprised when it crashes into the wall very quickly.”

Alison observed, “it’s impossible to tell what way it is going to go today. As Ian has just being outlining, the wording is extraordinary. The wording must be another sign of the incredible pressure the government is under. It doesn’t necessarily favour anyone.”

The discussion moved on to the Banking Inquiry in Ireland, following the appearances of Brian Cowen and Charlie McCreevy. “The one thing that I learned was that Cowen was such a delicate little snowflake,” Ian observed, not entirely sincerely. “He was just terribly bullied by that nasty Mr Trichet… It was pathetic, it was self-serving, there’s still no sense of self-accountability from any of these people”

Other stories discussed include a row over the Spawell complex - which led to a lively discussion about equality in sport by today’s panelists. After a lengthy input from Ian on the subject of women’s vs men’s tennis - “we can safely say you’ve had 80% of the time on this topic” - Alison pointed out, “I’m not saying one is better than the other, I’m just saying they’re different.”
