A 54-year-old Indian woman has survived a fight for her life after she was attacked by a leopard on her way home from working in the fields. 

Kamla Devi managed to scare off the wild animal using only a small spade and sickle after fighting him for over an hour near her village of Rudraprayag in Uttarakhand.

The mother-of-one had to walk over an hour a half to seek help after the attack which left her with deep wounds, three fractures and a significant amount of blood loss.

The leopard who eventually fled from the fight, is believed to have died from the injuries inflicted by Devi later on.

"She showed great courage by fighting the animal with a sickle and a small spade. The animal fled the spot after the struggle. We later found the leopard dead near the village," a villager told India Today.

Devi is currently in the hospital where Medical staff have said her condition is stable, but has had to have more than 100 stitches, due to the deep cuts on her head and legs. She is also being treated for two fractures on her right hand and one on her left.
