The photograph above turned up amidst the rubble near the World Trade Centre shortly after the 9/11 attacks. It was given to Elizabeth Stringer Keefe 13 years ago, and she had been trying to find the owner ever since.

And thanks to social media, Keefe was finally able to find the owner last Friday.

The picture belonged to Fred Mahe and was a photograph of his friend’s wedding in Colorado.

Mahe used to work at the World Trade Center, but now he lives in Colorado. The salesman kept the photo on his desk on the 77th floor of the World Trade Centre’s south tower.

Fortunately, Mahe never made it to work at the World Trade Center on September 11th 2001. He was getting off the subway just as the attack began.

Every year on September 11, Keefe posted the image online, hoping someone would recognise the happy couple and their friends.

Finally last Thursday, Keefe’s mission got a boost. Universal hub, a network of Boston blogs, wrote about her search, drawing more attention than ever.

More than 68,800 people re-tweeted the photo, one of whom was a friend of the photograph’s owner. He recognised Mahe’s face in the background and forwarded him a link.

Mahe then tweeted Keefe on Friday after seeing his photo:

“I KNOW THE PEOPLE IN THE PICTURE! I was at the wedding,” he posted.

Later on Friday, Keefe was able to speak to the grateful bride, Christine Laredo, who now lives in California with her husband, Christian Laredo.

“I remember that moment exactly — it was all my Colorado friends and it was fun being on that balcony,” Christine said. “We’re still married and very happy.”

“What a lovely person Elizabeth is to be dedicated and try to find the owners,” she added. “That makes me have a renewed hope for humanity.”
