Women are playing a strong role in getting the Irish economy back on track. That is one of the findings of a survey which shows a 14% jump in the number of female company directors since the recession began.

The business and credit risk analyst company Visionnet.ie says the economic crash prompted more people including women to set up their own business.

But while the number of women in the boardroom may be on the rise Ireland is still way behind its European counterparts when it comes to gender quotas in politics.

Hopes for new legislation

Ireland currently ranks 25th out of 27 countries in the European Union (EU) in terms of gender quotas in the Dáil.

Founder of the organisation is Michelle O'Donnell-Keating. She says while numbers are low they are hoping new legislation will change that.
