You are probably working longer hours now than you were in 2009.

37.5 hours is the average working week, according to the latest statistics from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

This is 30 minutes longer than it was five years ago, which stood at 35.2.

The education sector had the lowest at just 29.7 hours worked per week.

Self-employed people had average working hours of 44.6 per week, and part-time employees worked some 19.3 hours a week.

Niamh Hourigan is a senior lecturer in sociology at University College Cork.
