People who work long hours are at a greater risk of having a stroke, according to the latest research.

Data was taken from more than 603,000 people across Europe, the US and Australia - and analysed by researchers from University College London.

They found staying late at the office for just an hour or two can increase your chances of suffering a stroke.

The research suggests there is an increased risk of stroke if you work more than 55 hours a week.

The findings show that those who work 55 hours a week or more have a 1·3-times higher risk of stroke than those working standard hours.

And it says that this did not vary between men and women or by geographical region, suggesting that "the finding is robust".

The study, published in The Lancet, says: "These findings suggest that more attention should be paid to the management of vascular risk factors in individuals who work long hours".
