It is always strange when great actors make bad films, even when we acknowledge the not insignificant appeal of a handsome pay-cheque.

Tom Hardy filmed rom-com This Means War in 2010 - an unusual choice at that point in his burgeoning and critically-acclaimed career. What were his motivations behind taking the role?

"I love to do things I hadn't done before," he told USA Today, before segueing into some candid comments on making This Means War specifically. "I didn't understand how you could do something which is so much fun and be so miserable doing it. I probably won't do a romantic comedy again, do you know what I mean?" He also says he felt like an "other" on set.

While we're unlikely to see Tom Hardy in another rom-com - barring a particularly good director or script, perhaps - it is looking like we have many more interesting performances from the actor to come.

He stars alongside the late James Gandolfini in The Drop, which is due out here in November. He'll be playing the infamous Kray twins in next year's Legend, and he'll be taking over for Mel Gibson as the eponymous hero in Mad Max: Fury Road.
