As we saw against Georgia, Aiden McGeady's ability to come off the wing and do damage inside could prove to be an asset for Ireland in the long run.

It certainly helped yesterday evening as the Everton player's two goals helped Ireland to escape Tbilisi with a 2 - 1 win.

Interestingly, 75 per cent of the chances that he has created for Everton so far this season have been delivered from a central position.

This graphic by leading stats website Squawka illustrates that tendency:

However, as the sample size involves four chances and just three games so far, it may be too early to draw any definitive conclusions.

Last season, 33 per cent of his chances were created in central areas from January to May. But McGeady spent the first half of last season with Russian side Spartak Moscow and although he played from either wing, a shade under two-thirds of his chances were created in the attacking midfield zone from which he scored the winner last night.

That ability to cut in and create chances from a more central zone is especially important given the unreliable nature of McGeady's crossing. The former Celtic man has attempted nine crosses in the league this season with just two reaching their target.

In contrast a mor traditional wide man like James McClean creates far more chances from the wing. Last season for Wigan, Squawka's stats show that he created over 70 per cent of his chances from the flanks.
