If you're the kind of person that would be horrified at being surrounded by countless insects, read no further.

It's mayfly hatching season in the US, and this year the state of Wisconsin has taken the brunt of it. In the areas around the Mississippi River, swarms of them have been so large that they are clearly visible on weather radar.

Beginning on Sunday, the hatching resulted in scenes reminiscent of a horror movie. Mayflies covered buildings, cars and even caused a three-vehicle collision.

Though local birds and fish have never been happier, residents are understandably less enthusiastic. Petrol station owner Glen Siewer spoke to WEAU about the flies, which he claims to have filled four wheelbarrows with.

Offering some sound advice, he tells residents that "You want to keep your mouth shut and kind of cover your nose."

Hopefully we'll never have need of his advice over on this side of the Atlantic.
