Harney says all Tallaght referral letters are opened

The Health Minister has confirmed the existence of unopened GP referral letters at Tallaght hospital in the past , but she says they have all now been opened.

Reports today suggested there had been up to 30,000 unopened envelopes – but Mary Harney’s statement this evening backs up an earlier assurance by the hospital that all x-ray referrals were now being processed.

Minister Harney says the fact that correspondence hadn’t been dealt with was “completely unacceptable”.

She’s also revealed that the hosptial is meeting with local GP’s tomorrow as part of the ongoing process to improve access to clinics.
