Minister refuses to be drawn on Coughlan appointment

A Junior Minister is dismissing reports that Mary Couglan may become Ireland’s next EU Commissioner.

The Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation has said the choice of whether or not the Tanaiste goes to Brussels is entirely up to Brian Cowen.

Newspaper reports have suggested there are calls from Europe for her appointment as Agriculture Commissioner.

Speaking at a meeting in Dublin with Young Innovators, Conor Lenihan said any guessing about our next Commissioner is pure speculation.

“I think at the end of the day the Taoiseach will decide who is best to fulfil the role as Ireland’s representative at Brussels” he said.

Lenihan added “I think it’s the tendency in the media to speculate about all sorts of persons”.

“The Taoiseach will decide to appoint the best person who is available for play, and that is something only the Taoiseach will know right up to the last minute” he concluded.
