All this week listeners we were asking you to vote for the singer you regarded as the greatest female vocalist of all time. The Resutls are in;
TOP FEMALE SINGERS POLL
1. KATE BUSH
2. ARETHA FRANKLIN
3. DUSTY SPRINGFIELD
4. NINA SIMONE
5. AMY WINEHOUSE
6. EVA CASSIDY
7. SANDY DENNY
8. JANIS JOPLIN
9. ANNIE LENNOX
10. PATSY CLINE

Eddi Reader, Alanis Morissette & Sarah McLachlan should be in the running for greatest female vocalist Tom. On a different subject, we’re a bunch of wimps when it comes to the weather!!!! Wouldn’t mind so much if they’d said “schools closed Monday, then we’ll see” but this is the typical knee-jerk reaction of a government under pressure wanting to be seen to do something. Was talking to a Polish girl over the weekend; they’re laughing at us Tom….. Ilse
January 11, 2010 at 10:57 amAt long last a victory for real music. Enough of Simon Cowell & Louis Walsh X factor tripe. Long live Kate! A campaign should be started to try and get Kate to headline the Electric Picnic now that would be a thing to cherish!
January 15, 2010 at 3:56 pmKate Bush – It had to be. Blow the X factor out of the water ! For those wondering why Kate is No. 1, listen to these:
Prologue and Somewhere In Between from ‘Aerial’
Moments of Pleasure from ‘The Red Shoes’
This Woman’s Work from ‘The Sensual World’
Cloudbusting from ‘Hounds of Love’
Houdini from ‘The Dreaming’
Army Dreamers from ‘Never for Ever’
Hammer Horror from ‘Lionheart’
Saxophone Song from ‘The Kick inside’
etc. etc.
January 17, 2010 at 2:22 pmMy vote goes 100% to Eddi Reader.
Is that the complete list above? If so, where the heck is Dusty???
Play “Goin’ Back” on your show tomorrow and watch the votes pour in!
January 12, 2010 at 4:21 pmWell Its obvious by my username who I feel is the best female vocalist of all time and I am a little shocked to say the least that the beautiful but tragic voice of KAREN CARPENTER is not right on top,she was no jazz or blues singer..just a heavenly voice blessed with perfect pitch and a 3 octave range tinged with true sadness and beauty at the same time,a littel known fact about Karen is she was one John Lennons favourite lady singer too!
January 13, 2010 at 4:50 pmSo yes my vote goes to my favourite singer (male or female) KAREN CARPENTER
Tom,
January 13, 2010 at 10:52 pmHeres a few amazing female vocalists that I don’t see on your list; Cerys Matthews, KT Tunstall, Sheryl Crow, Kate Bush, Kirsty Mc Call and Debbie Harry all brilliant and should all be on the list. I do think that the best female vocalist of recent times has to be Amy Winehouse….Great show Tom…I hope you will do greatest male vocialists next!
Defo got to add Ani Difranco to that list and with 20 albums to her name you will never be stuck for a tune!!! Find myself playing the track “Grey” a lot lately.
January 14, 2010 at 10:11 amHi Tom, I’ve been listening this week for first time as I have recently been made redundant. Enjoying program especially feamale singer poll. Been listening out for Jennifer Warnes all week but haven’t heard her mentioned yet. You must be keping her for Friday. Keep it up and good luck with the tweeting
January 14, 2010 at 12:19 pmeh, I can’t see any mention of Alison Krauss – what’s the story?
January 14, 2010 at 5:02 pmTom, no one mentioned Marnie Nixon, that woman has an amazing voice and has sung so many songs that we think are sung by someone else so she rarely gets any credit. Granted most of the songs have been in movies but still……
January 15, 2010 at 9:38 amHi Tom
January 15, 2010 at 11:51 amI know it’s too late but Juliet Turner could have been a contender. Latest album “People Have Names” is great. Try “Elder of the Tribe”.
