The widow of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe is calling for tough mandatory sentences for anyone convicted of murdering a member of the force.

Anne McCabe signed a book of condolence for Adrian Donohue at Limerick Garda Station this afternoon.

The book was placed beneath a bust of her late husband who was shot dead during a botched robbery in Adare in Co. Limerick in 1996.

The Justice Minister Alan Shatter is to travel to Dundalk today to meet with the colleagues of Garda Donohoe.

Minister Shatter said the killing was an attack on the entire garda force and he said good progress is being made in the investigation.

He rejected suggestions that there should be a legislative response to the killing saying the gardai have all the tools they need to bring garda Donohoe's killers to justice.

Calls for 40-year jail terms

Minister Shatter said he will meet with the deceased garda's colleagues in Dundalk today to hear their views.

"I'm going directly from this event to Dundalk to meet with colleagues of Adrian Donohoe, and Garda Ryan who is still very stressed by these events" he said.

"I hope as early as is possible to meet with the family; I think they nee to be given appropriate space to come to terms with what's happened".

"And I'll continue today to be in contact with the Garda Commissioner" he added.

Detective Donohue was the first Garda to be murdered in the line of duty since Detective McCabe.

Anne McCabe is calling for tough sentences for those who kill Gardai.

She wants anyone convicted of killing a Garda to serve a 40-year jail term without any concession for good behaviour.
