Two Limerick men have appeared at the Special Criminal Court charged over the fatal shooting of Roy Collins.

Wayne Dundon (34) of Lenihan Avenue, Prospect and Nathan Killeen (22) of Hyde Road, Prospect, are accused of murdering the father of two at the Coin Castle amusement complex at the Roxboro shopping centre on April 9th 2009.

The new charges come nearly 3 years after gunman James Dillon pleaded guilty to the shooting.

The Special Criminal Court heard gardai met Wayne Dundon and Nathan Killeen in the courts complex today and informed them that on the directions of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) they were to be charged with the murder of Roy Collins on April 9th 2009.

The 2 men have been remanded in custody until April 23rd when it is expected the DPP will serve them with the book of evidence.

They remained silent at the hearing except to confirm their identities.

Prosecution solicitor Mr. Michael O' Donovan told the court that the DPP had certified that the ordinary courts were inadequate to deal with the administration  of justice and that each man should be charged in the Special Criminal Court.

Media coverage of the case

Wayne Dundon's barrister Shane O'Callaghan, BL, highlighted media coverage of the case.

He said that a public representative had made a statement on local radio in Limerick congratulating the gardai in bringing his client to court.

He said he was not looking for a media blackout but he was asking the court 'to direct the media to refrain from publishing prejudicial statements' and to bear in mind his client's presumption of innocence.

Presiding judge Mr. Justice Paul Butler said the court was 'not inclined to lecture people' or to issue a formal order.

''Clearly there shouldn't be comment on the merits of the upcoming trail or case. You're a little bit fortunate there isn't a jury. The court is unaware of such statements but such statements should be discouraged'' he said.
