An appeals court in Abu Dhabi has heard that a Chinese woman was falsely arrested for prostitution after hugging a friend in a park.

The woman, who worked in a nearby hotel, was having a birthday party in a park with another woman and three men. After receiving a present from one man, she returned the gift with a hug.

A nearby policeman misinterpreted the scene and arrested both women for prostitution. They were later convicted in the criminal court and sentenced to jail and deportation.

According to The National, defence lawyer Faayza Moussa has emphasised their good character, referring to their academic achievements and “prestigious families". She also added:

“They have a clean, decent record and are even virgins, which shows their conservative backgrounds.”

The case for appeal has been adjourned.
