Drunk driver apprehended after stopping to help Garda with flat tyre

A woman was apprehended for drink driving at Limerick District Court after pulling over to help a plain clothes Garda with a flat tyre.

The Limerick Leader reports Siobhan Cusack, 37, was today fined €500 and disqualified from driving for three years, following the incident on June 21 last year.

Garda Colm O’Shea had noticed one of the rear tyres was flat shortly after beginning his shift at 9pm, and pulled over to change tyres.

Soon after, another car pulled in behindd the Ford Focus and and Cusack emerged from the driver's side:

"A female got out, approached and was unsteady on her feet, as she walked towards us," said O'Shea. "She offered us assistance in changing the tyre, but I declined her offer."

Noticing her slurred speech and a smell of alcohol, O'Shea followed her back to her car, waiting for another officer to arrive before arresting her.

When breathalysed at the station, the woman returned a result of 101mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath, almost five times the limit of 22mg.
