The TD who predicted Ireland would face "an ISIS situation" over water protests has withdrawn his remarks.

Noel Coonan says he was "speaking from the heart", but admits he "over-egged" the comments in the Dáil last night.

The Tipperary TD has received death threats to his office after the remarks during a debate on water charges.

Mr Connan was speaking during the continued Dail debate on Irish Water, at which he said he welcomed the clarifications made on Wednesday.

He then went on to criticise the Socialist Party and others, suggesting that "the people of Ireland have now seen what they are facing" with the Socialist-led protests.

He said some of his constituents have been "horrified" by what they have seen.

But Mr Coonan told Newstalk Breakfast that his remarks went too far.
