Cold and wintry weather is expected to continue until the middle of next week.

Met Eireann has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice for the whole of the country.

It says a cold airmass from Canada is bringing the downpours.

In the west and north, several centimetres are expected to fall over hills, with a few centimetres likely at low levels.

Slight accumulations are also possible elsewhere, along with icy patches.

The warning is in place until midday on Wednesday.

Meanwhile it will be very cold tonight with occasional hail, sleet and snow showers in western and northern counties.

Wintry showers will be more scattered elsewhere, with overnight lows of 0 to -2°.

Tomorrow will be cold and bright, with some sunny spells but occasional heavy rain, hail, sleet and snow showers further west.

This will spread eastwards in the afternoon and evening.

Harm Luijkx is a forecaster with Met Éireann. He explains what is to come.

Dublin Airport has resumed operations, following an earlier suspension on Sunday due to snowfall in the capital.

The airport said flights were affected for around 20 minutes, to sweep slush from the main runway.

It adds that this was purely a safety precaution.
