Antonio Valencia is clearly a hard-working player but the Manchester United winger generally comes across as the shy and retiring type.

Indeed, this was a player who found the pressure of the Man United No 7 shirt to be too much for him.

Yet Valencia will captain Ecuador at the World Cup and BBC South American football correspondent Tim Vickery spoke to the team manager Reinaldo Rueda about that last week.

"If you remember the death of Chucho Benitez, he was a player who was absolutely irreplaceable for Ecuador because of his ability and how popular he was," said Vickery.

"Reinaldo Rueda, who is the coach of Ecuador, said that after [Chucho's death], he felt forced to make a change of captain and had to explain that to his existing captain. His new captain is Luis Antonio Valencia because Valencia was like Benitez' twin brother. They were very, very close so it was a way to get the group to rally around the memory of Benitez. I found that a really interesting story in terms of collective management."

Rueda also told Tim that Valencia was initially reluctant to take on the role but accepted for the good of the team.

Tim also explained how dangerous Ecuador could be at the World Cup and also touched on fan violence in Brazil after a supporter was beaten to death in Sao Paulo.
